3 Tips For Exercising While Caring For Toddlers

Hahahahahaha. So I am definitely the last person to give advice on this subject. I have never been an exercise-y person. But since my homework is to share how I keep in shape while caring for toddlers, I will give you my tips that I've discovered help me maintain an exercise goal (when I have one):1. I only work out for 30 minutes. For me, thirty minutes is doable. An hour is overwhelming and I will avoid that until some magical moment when I'll be able to devote an entire hour to working out. But I can easily find time for thirty minutes.

2. I only work out when it's most convenient for me.

I've read different suggestions on when it's supposedly the best time of day to work out, like early in the morning. But not only am I not a morning person, I'm exhausted from taking care of toddlers all day long (and night). I'm tired. This phase of life with toddlers is not physically easy!

So in order for me to commit, I need to work out when it's most convenient for me, which is late morning or after the kids have gone to bed. Work out when you can! Not when you think you should, and it'll be easier to stick with it.

3. Only work out where it's easiest for me.

I tried getting a gym membership, but at the time, getting out of the house with two toddlers was more overwhelming than working out itself. So I never went. I decided I just needed to do what was easiest for me, and that meant exercising at home.

I like to find my workout videos on YouTube. I'll just search "30 minute workouts for women" and tons of videos come up. I also love Tracy Anderson, that woman can work you out! There are so many videos on YouTube with professional yogis and fitness instructors who share 10, 15, and 30 minute videos, even hour long videos. And lots of zumba videos too! Whatever kind of mood you're in, you can find a fitness video on YouTube for it.

If you have/had toddlers, how did you find time to exercise?

It is way hard working out with a toddler! After Little J was born and I only had one it was easy to just put him in his bouncer or jumper and work out. Now that he's a toddler and I also have Little A, it's definitely harder! I usually work out before he eats lunch while he just plays around me, but he also likes to climb on top of me or under me while I am trying to do pilates (not helpful!). I do the videos on Youtube by Blogilates, and they are awesome! They are 5-20 minutes each, so I can do what I can!

I don't know if there is a franchise local to you, but since my daughter (now 3) was 6 weeks old I've been a member of my local Baby Bootcamp where your baby or toddler sits in the stroller as you have a 1 hour long bootcamp workout. It's amazing! Plus you meet and socialize with other local moms and basically have a giant play date after every class. I even continued going during my recent pregnancy with my son as the instructors are trained in modifying exercise for pregnancy and postpartum moms. Look into it, so fun and a great way to stay fit!
