It has commenced. Well, sort of. He's agreed that he likes his new Superman undies, but just hasn't agreed to wear them yet. I'll take this as progress, gotta take it where I can get it, right?
So Pig is almost three, 32 months to be exact. And I read that boys, on average, are potty trained around 38 months. This is good to know, because I don't want to start feeling like my kid is the only one still in diapers or that I'm "being lazy". So many of my friends started potty training as soon as their babies left their womb, but I've held strong in my conviction that later-is-better when it comes to potty training! It just seems like it'd be a much easier process if he initiated it and was truly ready to be out of diapers himself.
My midwife recommended this article, Don't Potty Train Your Baby, on her facebook page a couple years ago. It's written by a pediatric urologist and he believes few children are genuinely ready to potty train before the age of three. That's not to say that there aren't children who are definitely ready before three {especially girls since we're so much more intelligent and refined obviously}, but this encouraged me because I knew long before these days would come that Pig would not be down for potty training early.
He's super cautious. He walked for the first time at fourteen months, not because he couldn't have done it sooner, but just because he was being so careful. He holds the rail while going down the steps, very slowly, one foot at a time. He just isn't the type to jump into something new and unknown. So I don't want to force something on him that he has been adamantly saying no to. I want to wait until he's the one who is interested.
So I'll just keep casually asking and talking about it. The fact that he even let me take him to the store to pick out underwear was huge. We now have them out of the packaging and he will proudly show you his new, unworn superhero undies, but that's as far as he's willing to go. And that's okay, because I know within the next year, he will be out of diapers. Just like he eventually slept through the night - it will happen! {In the meantime, feel free to share your experience and tips, I'm going to need them!}
